Bhagwan Mahavir
The name digambar means literally ‘clothed in the quarters of the sky’and they are called ‘sky-lad. ‘nudity is the main doctrinal difference between the shvetambaras and the digambaras. The digambara view on ascetic nakedness was put by aparajita in the eighth century. The true monk must be completely naked; even a loincloth is a compromise. He must abandon all possessions and be no longer subject to the social considerations of pride and shame and to obey the vow of ahimsa, non-violence. The naked monk must follow the example of the jinas, who were naked. As well, he may not use an alms-bowl, but has to use his hands cupped together as a bowl. He can eat only once a day.
There are doctrinal differences with the shvetambaras over the jinas. The digambaras believe that kevalins, perfect saints, such as the jinas live without food. In fact, the jina can manifest no worldly activity and no longer has any bodily functions, for if he did his jiva, soul, would then change and he would not be omniscient. The jinas teach by a magical divine sound. There are also differing accounts of the life of mahavira. Birth of prince vardhaman queen trishala and her fourteen dreams from kalpasutra in a place called kundalagrama (district vaishali, bihar) situated close to ‘besadha patti’, 27 miles from patna in modern day bihar, india, mahavira was born to king siddartha and queen trishala on the 13th day under the rising moon of chaitra (april 12 according to the gregorian calendar). While still in his mother’s womb it is believed he brought wealth and prosperity to the entire kingdom which is why he was also known as vardhaman. An increase of all good things, like the abundant bloom of beautiful flowers, was noticed in the kingdom after his conception. Queen trishala had a number of (14 in swetambar sect, 16 in digambar sect) auspicious dreams before giving birth to vardhaman, signs foretelling the advent of a great soul.
Jain tradition states that after his birth, the hindu king of the gods, indra, bathed him in celestial milk with rituals befitting a future tirthankar and he was returned to his mother, trishala. Vardhaman’s birthday is celebrated as mahavir jayanti, the most important religious holiday of jains around the world.
Spiritual pursuit
At the age of thirty mahavira renounced his kingdom and family, gave up his worldly possessions, and spent twelve years as an ascetic. During these twelve years he spent most of his time meditating. He gave utmost regard to other living beings, including humans, animals and plants, and avoided harming them. He had given up all worldly possessions including his clothes, and lived an extremely austere life. He exhibited exemplary control over his senses while enduring the penance during these years. His courage and bravery earned him the name mahavira. These were the golden years of his spiritual journey at the end of which he achieved arihant status.

The aim of this trust is to give practical and helpful information that will assist in the rescue and short term care of birds. A lot of pleasure and satisfaction is gained when saving a wild creature’s life but one must never loose sight of the fact that it is wild and should be allowed to remain so. All orphaned, sick and injured creatures should be taken to a rescue centre as soon as possible so that the correct care can be given.
How to rescue a bird
Important things to remember when rescuing a bird
- Most importantly do not put yourself or the bird at risk
- If the bird looks orphaned, wait and watch, the parent birds may be away searching for food
- If a nestling has fallen out of its nest and you know for certain which nest it fell from try
putting it back - If you find a fledgling on the ground and you are worried about its safety place it in the
nearest bush or tree.
We have a passionate group of supporters who generously give up their time to rescue, rehabilitate and release orphaned, sick and injured birds. our centres accept and care for all birds and wildlife whether they are native, non-native or pet. We assist thousands of birds each year, many being the victims of cat attacks, road accidents, pollution (such as fishing line and nylon entanglements and botulism) or human cruelty. our vision is to build a bird rescue hospital and rehabilitation centre. our trust helps the birds how are injured and we provide treatment to them and give them a freedom to fly in the sky.
